DTF printing vs screen printing comparison on t-shirts in India

DTF Printing vs Screen Printing in India: Which is Better for Your Order?

Pick the wrong printing technique and you'll either blow your budget or end up with prints that crack, fade, or look nothing like your design. DTF and screen printing are both excellent — but for completely different types of orders. Here's exactly how to choose between them so you don't waste a rupee.

In this guide, we break down the key differences so you can make the right choice for your budget, design, and quantity. If you haven't decided on your garment yet, start with our complete guide to custom t-shirt printing in India.

What is DTF Printing?

DTF (Direct to Film) printing is a modern digital printing technique where your design is printed onto a special film, then heat-transferred onto the fabric. It works on virtually any fabric type — cotton, polyester, lycra, blends — and produces full-colour, photographic-quality prints.

DTF Printing: Pros & Cons

  • ✅ Full-colour prints with gradients, shadows, and fine detail
  • ✅ No minimum order — works for even 1 piece
  • ✅ Works on any fabric colour or type
  • ✅ Fast turnaround for small orders
  • ✅ Soft hand feel on the garment
  • ❌ Slightly higher per-unit cost for large quantities
  • ❌ Not ideal for very large print areas on budget orders

What is Screen Printing (Rubber/Plastisol)?

Screen printing is the traditional method where ink is pushed through a mesh screen onto the fabric. In India, rubber (plastisol) ink is the most common type used. Each colour in your design requires a separate screen, making it most cost-effective for simple, bold designs in large quantities.

Screen Printing: Pros & Cons

  • ✅ Very cost-effective for large quantities (50+ pieces)
  • ✅ Extremely durable — prints last for years
  • ✅ Vibrant, opaque colours on dark fabrics
  • ✅ Best for bold, solid-colour designs
  • ❌ Minimum quantity usually required (10–50 pieces per design)
  • ❌ Not suitable for photographic or gradient designs
  • ❌ Each colour adds to the cost
  • ❌ Longer setup time

DTF vs Screen Printing: Side-by-Side Comparison

Feature DTF Printing Screen Printing

Colour limit Unlimited Cost increases per colour
Fabric types All fabrics Cotton & blends

Which Should You Choose?

Choose DTF Printing if:

  • Your design has multiple colours, gradients, or photographic elements
  • You need a small quantity (under 50 pieces)
  • You want to print on dark or coloured garments without a white underbase issue
  • You need fast turnaround

Choose Screen Printing if:

  • Your design is simple with 1–4 solid colours
  • You're ordering 50+ pieces of the same design
  • You want the lowest possible per-unit cost
  • Durability is the top priority

What About Embroidery?

For polo shirts, caps, and premium uniforms, embroidery is often the best choice. It's more expensive than printing but produces a high-end, professional finish that lasts the life of the garment. Read our polo t-shirt uniform buyer's guide to see which branding method suits your garment type.

Our Recommendation for Common Order Types

  • Corporate uniforms (polo, 50+ pieces, logo only) — Embroidery or rubber print. See our corporate bulk printing guide for full details.
  • Event t-shirts (round neck, colourful design, 20–50 pieces) — DTF printing
  • College batch t-shirts (100+ pieces, simple design) — Screen/rubber printing
  • Brand merchandise (small batch, premium look) — DTF printing. Also consider custom hoodies for premium brand kits.
